I have now joined the ranks of people who used to have a blog based on hand-written perl scripts (well, actually ruby) and rsync (well, actually unison), and who eventually got sick of that and upgraded to a sane blogging platform. Well, actually WordPress. I look forward to getting hacked into and spamming you.

I think you’ve confused WordPress and ’sane’. :)
I’m now in the ranks of people who used to have a home-made Perl blog, then upgraded to Wordpress and soon after converted back to the good old home-made Perl. Maybe Wordpress is sane, but it doesn’t help in keeping your own sanity.
as long as you keep your installatoin of wordpress current the chances of you being hacked are pretty small
